HaSSP National Pest Risk Training Workshop: Lusaka, Zambia

FANRPAN under the Harmonized Seed Security Project engaged Center of Phytosanitary Excellence (COPE) to conduct National Pest Risk Analysis (PRA) Training Workshops in Malawi, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe during the months of November and December 2013. The objectives of the training workshops were:

  • To create awareness on the importance of pest risk analysis in phytosanitary systems
  • To sensitize participants on the sources of PRA information
  • To understand the various steps in PRA process
  • To enhance skills in the use of PRA tools

The first training workshop was conducted in Zambia from 26 -28 November 2013. Mrs Monde Zulu, the Deputy Director of the Zambia Agricultural Research Institute (ZARI) officially opened the workshop on behalf of the Director of ZARI. She outlined that pest risk analysis is critical in making quarantine decisions and therefore the training would enhance staff capacity to tackle day to day activities.

Seventeen officers from Zambia Agricultural Research Organization participated in the three day training workshop which comprised of theory classes; practical hands-on training on PRA; as well as a final evaluation at the close of the course. The trainers were Mr George Momanyi, a PRA specialist from KEPHIS/COPE and Dr Kenn Msiska, Head of Quarantine and Phytosanitary Services, ZARI. Topics covered during the training included:

  • Principles of PRA,
  • sources of PRA information,
  • Tools for PRA and stages in PRA,

In addition trainees participated in developing a draft PRA for importation of bean Phaseolus vulgaris seed from Malawi, Swaziland and Zimbabwe into Zambia.
