Commentary - Engaging youth in agriculture - Investing in our future
4 March 2013

With an expected population of 9 billion by 2050 and declining interest of youth worldwide to remain in rural areas and take up agriculture, who will feed this growing population? Youth make up about one fifth of the population of developing and emerging economies and face global unemployment levels from 10-28%.

The number of young people of working age is increasing while this same group continues to shy away from careers in agriculture.

Agriculture has an image problem. There is a decreasing interest among youth in entering agricultural related fields due to the persistent perception of agriculture as an outdated field with minimal financial returns. But it remains true that youth face large challenges accessing land and finance without collateral.
