Climate-Smart Agriculture

On 13 - 14 September 2011 the South African Government hosted the following Conference:


This was a joint initiative between the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) and the African Union (AU). The objective of the conference was sharing leadership perspectives, exploring challenges, and grasping new opportunities for climate-smart agriculture in Africa.

The Conference also included technical preparatory and Ministerial meetings. The Ministerial meeting will conclude with the production of a communique: On the Road to Durban. Ministers will discuss challenges and opportunities, country strategies and public and private financing for enhancing agricultural productivity in a changing climate.

Opening Documentary on Climate-Smart Agriculture: "Leading with Agriculture" was screened to all delegates.

The FANRPAN CEO, Dr Lindiwe Majele Sibanda, was a panelist on Tuesday 13 September. Panel Discussion: Framing the Issues - Challenges and Opportunities for Climate-Smart Agriculture

Dr Sibanda received applause for her talk which focused on "A deal without agriculture is not deal at all", especially for CoP 17.

Her talk offered a three-pronged approach for delegates to focus on:
  • Identify negotiators and ensure that these negotiators are capacitated and silos are eroded
  • Hold negotiators to account before, during and after CoP 17
  • Build a knowledge to capacitate civil society
As part of the ceremony, the Minister of Agriculture of Swaziland, Honourable Clement Dlamini, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with DAFF to share and network on technical matters, especially Climate Smart Agriculture.

The morning session also included entertainment by a Soweto Gospelchoir who were recipients of two Emmy awards.
