Agriculture and Rural Development Day 2010
Gran Melia Hotel, Cancun/Mexico
4 December 2010

Finding solutions to feed the world in face of climate change

Five hundred policy makers, farmers, scientists, and representatives from the private sector and civil society will meet to identify what agriculture can do to help feed a global population of nine billion by 2050 – in a warmer world with more extreme weather patterns.

Agriculture is where the issues of climate change, food security and poverty reduction meet. Agriculture needs to both adapt to climate change and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. ARD Day 2010 will take place in parallel to the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

ARD Day 2010 will focus on identifying solutions by answering four questions:
  • What will a 2-degree-plus-world look like, and how can farmers be helped to adapt to the impacts on a large scale?
  • Can agriculture deliver sustainable food security while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions significantly, or are there major tradeoffs?
  • Why isn't scientific knowledge about 'carbon-friendly' agriculture being put into practice more quickly, and how can the obstacles to action be removed?
  • How will the development of more sustainable and 'carbon-friendly' agriculture be paid for, and what role can carbon finance play?
Speakers include:
  • Ignacio Rivera Rodríguez, Sub-Secretary for Rural Development, Secretariat for Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA), Mexico
  • Alberto Cárdenas Jiménez, Senator for Jalisco State (also former state governor and former Secretary of SAGARPA and the Secretariat for the Environment and Natural Resources or SEMARNAT), Mexico
  • Inger Andersen, Vice President for Sustainable Development, World Bank
Hosted, sponsored and organized by more than 20 organizations, ARD Day 2010 will feature keynote speeches, round-table discussions and a marketplace of ideas that highlight successes in agricultural mitigation and adaptation.
