FANRPAN participates in the ACTESA 3rd stakeholders meeting

The Alliance for Commodity Trade in Eastern and Southern Africa (ACTESA) held its 3rd stakeholders meeting in Lusaka on 11th and 12th of May 2010. brought together cooperating partners of ACTESA, national and regional farmer organisations, trade associations, Common Market of East and Sothern Africa (COMESA) member states and other key stakeholders in the agricultural sector. This Meeting was preceded by a Guiding Investment In Support of Agricultural Marketing in Africa (GISAMA) meeting on the 10th and followed by the World Food Programme (WFP) - Purchase for Progress (P4P) meeting on the 13th May. These three meetings were co-organised and sponsored by COMESA, ACTESA and WFP.

The meeting was officially opened by Hon. Peter Daka, Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Zambia with welcome remarks given by Mr. Sindiso Ngwenya, Secretary General, and COMESA. ACTESA CEO, Dr. Chris Muyunda. ACTESA Chairman Mr Phillip Kiriro also attended the meeting. Honourable Daka urged ACTESA to produce an appropriate trade and marketing agenda that will motivate producers to become sustainable and reliable producers for the huge regional market. COMESA Secretary General Mr Sindiso Ngwenya advised ACTESA to take advantage of the COMESA, EAC and SADC Tripartite arrangement of the three regional economic bodies including the COMESA Customs Union to penetrate across borders and push forward their programmes. Agriculture is the main engine of economic growth for the region and stands out as a priority sector to contribute to regional food security.

Day one of the stakeholders meeting featured an update on ACTESA implementation/ Briefing on the last Stakeholders Meeting (held in November 2009 Addis Ababa). This was followed by brief presentations of programs under ACTESA, namely AAMP, GISAMA, COMRAP/STAR, Livestock and Biotech. A brief presentation on the expected support from AUSAID was also made. Stakeholders (Traders, Market institutions, Processors and Farmers) were given an opportunity to give their views on challenges highlighted by the presentations. Day two featured presentations by development partners such as DFID, USAID, SDC, WFP, EC, ILRI/ReSakss and AGRA. This was followed by working groups on identification of priority actions (i) Competitiveness (ii) Services, (iii) Commercialization

FANRPAN was represented by the Chief Executive Officer, Dr Lindiwe Majele Sibanda and Ms Sithembile Ndema, the Programme Manager responsible for the Women Accessing Realigned Markets (WARM). In the different presentations made, ACTESA highlighted that a Memorandum of Understanding between ACTESA and FANRPAN was being finalised. The FANRPAN team also took the opportunity to meet with donors and relevant stakeholders to discuss the progress in the development of the COMESA Regional CAADP Compact.
