On March 20th 2008, the University of Mauritius’ Faculty of Agriculture formalised its position as FANRPAN Node host by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the FANRPAN Regional Secretariat. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Dr. Lindiwe Majele Sibanda represented FANRPAN, whilst the Faculty of Agriculture was represented by the Chairman, Prof. D. Puchooa. The signing ceremony was also attended by members of the Mauritius Node Steering Committee.

Speaking after signing, the FANRPAN CEO urged the members of the steering committee to spearhead a national planning process that would lead to a Node Strategic Plan. Dr Sibanda emphasised the need to link the node’s activities to the regional secretariat, including increasing visibility by taking advantage of existing communication media such as the website and newsletters and ensuring an updated database of stakeholders.

The signing of the MoU comes on the heels of a FANRPAN National Node Common Visioning Workshop that was held at the Gold Crest Hotel, Quatre Bornes on 19 March 2008. The national workshop was a follow up to Regional Node coordinators Common Visioning Workshop held from 4 – 7 February in Johannesburg where the FANRPAN Regional Secretariat shared the new strategic thrust and business plan, and the efforts being made to mobilise resources for the network. This is part of a continuing process of revamping FANRPAN and ensuring adequate conditions for the network’s operational effectiveness and grant worthiness.

The national workshop was attended by 36 key stakeholders, and these were distributed as follows; 6 from government, 7 from parastatal bodies, 7 from national farmer organisations, 4 from private sector, 3 representing civil society, 2 from international donor agencies, 1 from the Consumer Association, and 6 from policy analysis/research institutions. Prof. Indur Fagoonee, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Mauritius delivered the welcome address, whilst Dr D. Dumur, Director of the Agricultural Research and Extension Unit delivered the keynote address on behalf of Honourable Dr. Alvin Boolell, the Minister of Agro-Industry and Fisheries. Mr Francis Hale represented the CEO of FANRPAN and delivered the overview of FANRPAN, including the new strategic thrust, the business plan, and on-going research projects.
