The Partnership to Cut Hunger and Poverty in Africa, The African Ambassadors’ Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development (CARD)

Significant changes are taking place in Africa – from how governments operate, set their priorities and interact with business, civil society and donor community to the way new science, technology and innovations (STI) are being used to spur economic growth. You are invited to a conversation with visiting African diplomats, policy and business leaders to discuss the role of agriculture, science and technology in Africa today.

After brief opening remarks by Dr. Monty Jones on Africa’s progress and challenges on STI, Ambassador Hawa Ndilowe will discuss Malawi’s commitment to science and technology as well as the role of African universities in future economic growth and development; Dr. Lindiwe Sibanda will highlight key policies, institutional and regulatory changes driving economic growth in southern Africa; Mr. Michael Kijjambu, whose business was featured in the award-winning documentary “Africa: Open for Business,” will explain how value chain development is transforming smallholder farming in Africa; and Stephen Smith will discuss the importance of Africa’s science and technology public-private sector partnership, intellectual property rights and genetic diversity.
