CIAT: Post-doctoral Fellow
1 July 2007 - 10 August 2007
International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT)

Under a joint project between the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), CIAT wishes to appoint a post-doctoral social scientist to support the Centers' joint research activities in Southern Africa.

Responsibilities: The social scientist will be responsible for conducting action research to develop appropriate approaches to analyse farmers' decision-making processes, trade-off analyses and adoption strategies for different interventions aimed at improving food security and household income. Another aspect of the work will be the analysis of the effectiveness of adaptive research programs and impacts of agricultural innovations on livelihoods. The social scientist will implement projects that are aimed at increasing total farm productivity in vulnerable production systems through improved germplasm, water and nutrient use efficiencies.

Specific responsibilities will include:

  • Working with stakeholders to develop and define the overall objectives on which the social science research will be based.
  • Implement research to analyse trade-offs and returns to alternative resource allocation options by farmers at the farm level and quantify returns to investment of land, labour and financial capital.
  • Conduct research to evaluate the effectiveness of different adaptive research approaches and their impacts on rural livelihoods.
  • Contribute to research on the impacts of policy on technology adoption.
  • Use participatory approaches and methods to implement research programmes and collaborative activities with farmer groups and communities in collaboration with partners.
  • Develop capacity within partners to establish and manage both participatory and formal analysis systems and provide technical support to the process.
  • Supporting other on-going research activities in the region and provide evidence based recommendations to other CIAT and CIMMYT projects, and to other organizations, to strengthen and guide these processes and their replication.
Requirements: The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. preferably in Agricultural Economics, Rural Sociology, Development Studies or another relevant social science discipline, with practical experience in applying participatory research approaches and quantitative methods. The candidate should have demonstrated skills in working as a member of a multicultural and multidisciplinary team and a solid record of research publication. Willingness to travel extensively and to spend a significant amount of time in the field working with rural communities and national programs is essential for this position, as is fluency in English. Capacity to communicate in Portuguese is an advantage. The appointment will be for two years, and the scientist will be based in Sussendenga Zonal Research Station, near Chimoio, Mozambique.

Screening of CVs for this position will begin immediately and end on August 10th 2007. Applications, including Curriculum vitae and the names and contact details of three professional referees (including telephone, fax numbers and email address), should be sent to Robert Delve () and Jemimah Njuki ().

Previous applicants to this position should not reapply
