Mbabane: Minister of Agriculture, Clement Dlamini has lauded the partnership entered into between government, farmers and Swaziland Beverages (SB). SB has committed to supporting Lowveld farmers in the production of sorghum, so they could use it in producing some of their products.

Dlamini, speaking at the National Sorghum Field Day in KaLanga last week, said such a partnership would work well if farmers realise the benefits from it. He pointed out that this would be important to sustainable production of sorghum. "There can be no processing without production of the raw materials required. Therefore, farmers should also endeavour to produce a good quality product, which could only be realised if recommended farming practices are employed," he said.

He added that government viewed the partnership as essential in improving the welfare of Swazi people, pointing out that such initiatives would ensure that food insecurity problems and poverty alleviation are addressed as early as possible. "This would ensure creation of jobs in the rural areas, which would contribute to reducing levels of rural-urban migration," he said.

He also noted that by entering into such a partnership, Swaziland Beverages had demonstrated a commitment they had made in 2008. He further assured the company that it shall get all the support it required from government.  "I urge farmers to diversify their farming to cope with the challenges of climate change and also take advantage of market opportunities. This would ensure that soil fertility and pest management practices are enhanced," he said.
