SADC urges investors to build basic infrastructure

Luanda:   The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is open to initiatives of investors from the private sector to build basic infrastructure such as transport corridors, projects for water and energy supply, information technology and communication and border conservation areas.

This call was launched Friday in Luanda by SADC assistant Executive Secretary João Caholo while addressing a dinner co-organized by the regional secretariat and ANIP to promote and attract investment to the southern Africa region.

Caholo, who is also an engineer, said that those who wanted to invest in one of the 15 countries of the community should visit the organization’s secretariat, based in Botswana, in order to get informed on the projects.  According to him, the SADC had the potential to be a surplus producer of electricity and in other sectors, but he also recognized the need to create suitable legal conditions to attract investments.

With regards to tourism, the SADC official said everything was being done to attract tourists coming to Africa for the ongoing African Cup of Nations in Angola and the FIFA World Cup in South Africa in June and July.

The dinner was part of the “SADC2010 Strategy”. a programme for promotion of investment to be implemented in the context of the African Cup of Nations (Angola) and the World Cup in South Africa.  The SADC comprises Angola, South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabue, Tanzania, DR Congo, Mozambique, Lesotho, Mauritius, Seychelles, Namibia, Swaziland and Madagascar.
