Malawian inflation accelerates to 7.6% on higher food prices

Blantyre: Inflation in Malawi accelerated to 7.6 percent in December as prices of corn and other foods increased, the National Statistics Office of Malawi said. The inflation rate climbed from 7.2 percent in November, the Zomba-based agency said in an e-mailed statement today. Last month, the state-run Agriculture Development and Marketing Corp. increased the price of corn, a staple in the southern African nation, by 25 percent to 50 kwacha (34 cents) per kilogram (2.2 pounds).
