Luanda:  Staple cereal (maize, massango and massambala) production in Angola during the 2008/2009 agricultural year was 1.052 billion tonnes, for year-on-year growth of 42 percent, Agriculture Minister Afonso Pedro Canga said Monday in Luanda.

Production of roots and tubers was 14 million tonnes, up 21.5 percent. Timber production stood at 90,476 cubic metres of logs.

Despite higher production, the sector continues to register deficiencies in cereals, legumes and meat, as “domestic production of those products does not yet meet the country’s needs,” Canga said.

In 2009 the government set up financing of US$35 million to provide agricultural support for family producers and farmers, he added. (macauhub)
