ANNOUNCEMENTS
The ongoing food crisis presents an opportune moment for Southern Africa to review its policies and put in place long term strategies that will make the region food secure.

The Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network (FANRPAN) convened a Board and Partners meeting to update its current and potential partners on its programmes. The one-day stakeholder meeting was held on Friday the 20th of June 2008 at the Lakeview Airport Lodge.

The meeting was attended by FANRPAN's Board of Governors, coordinators of our programmes, members of the Diplomatic Corps, representatives from UN agencies, donors and technical partners. The meeting took the form of short plenary presentations with more time devoted to programme souk- exhibitions.

Vacancies in the Research Domain "Earth System Analysis" at PIK
Available: Four senior positions to support the development of PIK's next generation of Earth system models, one senior position for the further development of a global land use change model, and two PhD student positions to work on climate change adaptation in African agriculture.

This new course from the University of East Anglia, will cover a range of issues surrounding international and local dimensions, particularly the questions of mitigation and adaptation in resource-poor and vulnerable settings.

Grants in water resources
Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) opens a call for applications for funding of the following types of individual grants: Post Doctoral Grants (BPD) and Doctoral Grants (BD).

This call for applications is open between 12 May and 15 September 2008, and will have two evaluation cycles.

Research grants: Environmental economics
The Centre for Environmental Economics and Policy in Africa (CEEPA) is mandated to enhance the capacity of African researchers to conduct environmental economics and policy inquiry of relevance to African problems and increase the awareness of environmental and economic managers and policy makers of the role of environmental economics in sustainable development.

African women in science: Call for nominations
A Women in Science competition is now being held to identify and recognize women scientists in sub-Saharan Africa who are engaged in innovative and pioneering research and communicating the outputs -- knowledge, technologies, approaches -- for enhancing agricultural performance in sub-Saharan Africa.

Third Regional Conference on AWM in ESA
The Third Regional Conference on Agricultural Water Management in Eastern and Southern Africa will be hosted by UNECA, with the theme: "Investment in Agricultural Water Management Pays".

Salzburg Global Seminar on Africa’s Green Revolution
Dr Lindiwe Majele Sibanda represented FANRPAN at the Salzburg Global Seminar: Towards a "Green Revolution" in Africa, where she presented a paper on one of the main themes of the conference: Governance and Policy Processes. In her presentation Dr Sibanda referred to the "rainbow revolution" and as reported in the conference blog Salzburg Day 2: Rainbow Revolutions and Silver Bullets, the roundtable discussions picked up on this and a strong message emerged that what is needed instead of a green revolution was a 'rainbow revolution' with a 'green ethic'. Dr Doug Merrey, FANRPAN's Director of Research, recently addressed two international water policy conferences. He presented a keynote presentation to the International Congress for Irrigation and Drainage Day symposium, hosted by Wageningen University. The symposium was attended by over 100 water policy practitioners and policy researchers. At the Africa Water Week, held in Tunis, he presented a paper in the session dealing with agricultural water management.

World food leaders meet to bridge divide with small-scale farmers
Over 130 world leaders in farming, policy, agri-food business, research and civil society met in Beijing, China, 5-6 March. The first ever global attempt to assess how modernisation of the food system can include and benefit small-scale farmers.

The conference was an initiative of the Regoverning Markets programme, which represents a global consortium of 15 institutions worldwide and is coordinated by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED).
