REGIONAL CLIMATE SMART AGRICULTURE (CSA) CONFERENCE
The Southern African region has experienced a number of extreme weather occurrences which point
to climate change. It has long been established that climate change will have huge impacts on
agricultural production as well as the natural resource base upon which agriculture depends.
Adaptation to climate change and the use of practices and technologies that improve resilience of
agricultural systems are essential for ensuring food security. Climate-smart agriculture (CSA), an
approach that helps to guide actions needed to transform and reorient agricultural systems to
effectively support development and ensure food security in a changing climate, has been lauded as a
potential solution to Africa's climate change challenges.
The South Africa FANRPAN node hosting institution, the National Agricultural Marketing Council
(NAMC), in partnership with the FANRPAN Regional Secretariat, the German Development
Cooperation GIZ-funded SADC programme on climate change adaptation in agriculture, and the
Centre for Coordination of Agricultural Research and Development for Southern Africa
(CCARDESA) will convene a one day CSA conference at the Birchwood Hotel, Boksburg South
The conference aims at contributing to the adoption of climate resilient agriculture practices through
sharing information on Climate Smart Agriculture best practices and innovation among senior
agriculture extension officials and other key stakeholders in the region. The workshop will attract
about 80 high level Senior Agriculture stakeholders from the SADC region.
Main Speakers: Representatives from the SADC Secretariat, Food, Agriculture and Natural
Resources Directorate, the CGIAR Research Programme on Climate Change, Agriculture and
Food Security (CCAFS), the Agricultural Research Council of South Africa and the Ministry of
Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development of Malawi.
