HaSSP Field Day at Fuve Panganayi, Zaka

The HaSSP Field was held on the 08th of May 2014 at Fuve Pangangayi. HaSSP aims to contribute to improved food security of small holder farmers through increased availability of and access to improved seed. The host farmer, Esther Gundani from Shed C planted 0.3ha of Gloria Breeders seed under irrigation.

During the field day, the SDC sponsored SAMP project handed over a second hand Mazda T35 (3.5t) truck that is meant to assist seed growers with transport for seed and inputs


A total of 910 composed of approximately 60% females and 40% males attended. DA - Zaka, PAEO (Mr Poshai), DAEO (Mr K.Pedzisai), Chief Nhema, Head of Seed Services (Dr Mujaju). Also in attendance were the SDC Regional Program Manager (Mr B. Ncube), GRM team leader (Alex Carr) and FANRPAN Node representative Dr Isiah Mharapara.

The following dignitaries attended; Deputy Min of Agriculture (Hon Marapira), Min of State for Provincial Affairs (Hon Bhasikiti), Permanent Secretary of Agriculture (Mr Chitsiko). Also in attendance were the MP's Zaka District (Hon. Chakona and Hon. Mavenyengwa). Chief Nhema led a group of four chiefs that attended the field day.

Key issues from speakers

Min of State for Provincial Affairs speech: The Hon Minister emphasized on the need for farmers to take farming as a business. He reiterated that farmers should desist from free hand outs and should aim to produce high quality products in the right quantities. He also requested expansion of project to other districts


The Minister of State for Provincial Affairs handed over the truck that was provided to Zaka Super Seeds from GRM International. The community was warned against abuse of the truck

He promised to look into the issue of electrification of Fuve Panganayi processing plant. He urged the staff at Zaka Super Seeds to desist from mishandling or abusing the truck. During the current season HaSSP farmers planted two varieties of bean seed on 16 hectares. The farmers expect to harvest 32 tonnes of seed. This tonnage includes 3.4 tonnes of Basic seed of the variety Nua45 and 3.6 tonnes of Basic seed of the variety Gloria.
Prizes were handed over to the farmers that had excelled during the season. Selection of winners was based on farmers ability to adhere to good agronomic practices and meeting seed production standards as stipulated by Seed Services.
