FANRPAN to Participate At the 2014 Chicago Council Global Food Security Symposium
19 May 2014

FANRPAN CEO, Dr Lindiwe Majele Sibanda will join global leaders at the 2014 Chicago Council Global Food Security Symposium to be held on May 22, 2014 in Washington, DC. The theme for this year's Symposium is "Advancing Global Food Security in the Face of Weather Volatility and Climate Change".

The global food system is growing more fragile, and a changing climate and increasingly volatile weather patterns could reduce food production globally by 2 percent each decade for the rest of this century. The world's growers, especially smallscale farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia and agrifood businesses, must adapt to these conditions if food production is to be increased sustainably and nutritiously by 60 percent by 2050. Symposium sessions will explore:

  • The climate-food nexus and what it means for food security, conflict, economic growth, and the environment.
  • The most effective approaches to making food systems more resilient to extreme weather and a changing climate.
  • Opportunities to better manage risks to agriculture and food production associated with weather and climate change.
  • The water-agriculture nexus and promising approaches to successfully managing water stresses related to food production.

ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM

The Global Food Security Symposium has been convened by The Chicago Council on Global Affairs annually since 2010 to identify opportunities for US leadership in alleviating hunger and poverty through agricultural development. In 2013, the Council convened senior leaders from across sectors to chart a course for how science, trade, and business can be mobilized to advance food and nutrition security. Speakers included Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, USAID Administrator Dr. Rajiv Shah, Dr. Helene D. Gayle, and Ms. Lauren Bush Lauren. The 2012 symposium served as the platform for launching the G8 New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition and featured speakers such as President Barack Obama; former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton; and global philanthropic leader Bono.
