The SADC Secretariat is hosting a SADC Photo Competition entitled “Crossing Borders – Diversity of nature and wildlife in the SADC region”.

The competition is in line with the International Year of Forests 2011. Forests are home to 80% of our land animals and plants. They are essential to people, providing resources, homes, and clean air and water but also act as sinks for carbon dioxide, a green house gas, which is responsible for climate change and global warming.

The photo competition is also in line with the Biodiversity Decade. Over the next ten years, from 2011–2020, countries all over the world are taking action to help save the variety of life on Earth so that we can live more in harmony with nature. Our wellbeing is dependent on the health of our ecosystems. This decade is critical as it's the timeframe for implementing the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity agreed in Nagoya Japan in October 2010.

The SADC Region therefore joins the international community in commemorating these two events. The aim of the SADC Photo Competition is to showcase the diversity of nature and ecosystems in the SADC region. The winning photos will be presented at the SADC exhibition booth during the UNFCCC COP17 in Durban, South Africa.
