Why the Ministerial Conference on Higher Education in Agriculture in Africa (CHEA)?

The Ministerial Conference on Higher Education in Agriculture in Africa (CHEA) was held as a policy dialogue conference for the purpose of reaffirming high level commitment to Higher Education in Agriculture in Africa. The objective were to mobilze high level political and development commitment for increasing investments in capacity development, including Higher Education, Science and Innovations in Africa.

Conference Conveners / Organizers

The Conference was convened by the Uganda Government in partnership with CTA, Rockefeller Foundation, ATPS (African Technology Policy Network), the Danish Development Research Network (DDNR), FARA, RUFORUM, Association of African Universities (AAU), ANAFE (African Network of Agriculture and Forestry Education), World Bank, American Public and Land Grant Universities (APLU), Agrinatura (European Network of Universities and Agricultural Research Institutions), Makerere University, IDRC, NPCA, COMESA and FANRPAN (Food Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network).

Structure of the meeting:

Pre-conference Meetings and Workshops

A number of preconference meetings took place just before the conference. These included: Policy training for universities (13-14 November, 2010), Monitoring and Evaluation workshop for RUFROUM universities (13 November 2010) and RUFORUM/ACP Outreach Project meeting (14 November, 2010).

A total of 8 conference side events were held on the 15-16 November, 2010 and they are as follows;

  • Theme 1a: Reinforcing the Relevance of African Universities
  • Theme 1b: Enabling universities become learning institutions
  • Theme 2: Harnessing the Opportunities and Developments in ICT
  • Theme 4: Promoting Women education and leadership in Higher Education in Agriculture
  • Theme 7: Integrating Agricultural Tertiary Education in the CAADP process

Conference Side Events 16 November, 2010

  • Theme 3: Anticipating the futures – scenario mapping for policy and investment in Agricultural Higher Education
  • Theme 5: Placing Agricultural Tertiary Education in the Policy Agenda
  • Theme 6: Strengthening Partnerships in Agricultural Tertiary Education

Main Conference:

The main conference was scheduled for 17- 19 November, 2010. There were a total of seven exciting panel discussions focusing on:
  1. Investing in African Capacity for Innovations.
  2. Placing Agricultural Tertiary Education in Policy Agenda.
  3. Feedback from the Conference Side Events.
  4. Global Experiences and Implications for Africa.
  5. Transforming African Universities to Learning Institutions.
  6. Financing Higher Education in Africa.
  7. Promoting Partnerships in Higher Education.
