Harmonized Seed Security Project Proceedings Report
Lilongwe, Malawi
4 August 2010 - 6 August 2010

The Harmonised Seed Security National Workshop was conducted at Cross Roads Hotel in Lilongwe from 4 to 6 August. The workshop was attended by 35 participants representing farmers, government, private sector, NGOs, development partners, researchers and HASSP Seed Elders. The Consultative Group of International Agricultural Research Centers were represented by CIAT and ICRISAT. The ultimate aim of the workshop was for the diverse range of seed stakeholders in Malawi to jointly reflect and plan on how they could contribute to improved seed development, quality, availability and affordability and its movement within and between SADC countries given the primacy of seed security in achieving food security. The workshop was convened by FANRPAN regional office and its node in Malawi which is hosted by the Civil Society Agriculture Network (CISANET).

Specifically, the workshop's objectives were:
  1. To build participants' understanding of the SADC seed harmonization protocols;
  2. To collectively define a common vision for Malawi's stakeholders in the seed value chain of the four-year Harmonized Seed Security Project (HaSSP) - a pilot project which follows the SADC Seed Security Network (SSSN 1);
  3. To establish the baseline of where the project is starting from, including mapping of existing seed projects and initiatives to avoid overlap; and
  4. To generate a multi-stakeholder four-year national work plan.
