Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA) Media Experts Planning Meeting
Nairobi, Kenya
29 June 2010 - 7 July 2010

FANRPAN Reps: Mr Lufingo W Mwamakamba

The Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA) in conjunction with ICRAF hosted a Media Experts Planning meeting in Nairobi, Kenya from the 29th of June to the 2nd of July 2010. The meeting is a follow up on the recommendations of CTA Media Seminar that took place in October 2009 in Brussels, Belgium. The Brussels meetings recommended refocus of CTA media effort and putting the people at the centre of the CTA media support to the key beneficiaries.

The Nairobi media meeting was attended by about 40 experts representing the main actors at the interface of media, agriculture and rural development (journalists, academics, media associations, broadcasters, researchers, scientists, farmer groups, policy makers, communication specialists from public services, development projects and national institutions) from West, Central, East and Southern Africa.

Participants discussed how media can play a greater role in the promotion of agriculture and rural development in Africa, bridging the gap between media and agriculture. In addition, explored the media scenario in the region, challenges and opportunities. Participants also discussed possible intervention areas, resources mobilization, needed support, linkages, networking, collaboration, partnerships, and synergies.

The objective of the meeting was to form an operational framework for the four African regions to guide relevant and appropriate priority interventions by various actors. CTA will use the outputs of the meeting to refine its media strategy and make its media support more comprehensive.

The FANRPAN Regional Secretariat was represented by Mr. Lufingo Witson Mwamakamba.

Welcoming remarks were given by Prof. August Temu of ICRAF and CTA Director, Mr Hailu. The media meeting was officially opened by Dr Wilson Songa; PS of Ministry of Agriculture & CTA Board Member
