FANRPAN Food Security Policy Leadership Award 2009
A Call for Nominations

The Food Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network (FANRPAN) is a Southern African network that promotes food, agriculture and natural resources (FANR) policies through research, analysis and dialogue at the national, regional and global levels.

The FANRPAN Food Security Policy Leadership Award is an annual award launched in 2008, to honor individuals or organizations that have made effective contributions in food security through focused policies with the ultimate goal of reducing hunger in the region. The FANRPAN Award has no cash prize, it comprises a variety of productive prizes all donated by FANRPAN's partners. The prizes are related to capacity building in the agricultural industry and to FANRPAN's core policy research themes: i) Food security ii) Agricultural productivity iii) Natural Resources and Environment and iv) HIV/AIDS mitigation, all aimed at promoting economic growth and employment creation.

Nomination & Selection Procedure

The nomination process for the 2009 FANRPAN Award starts with invited nominators submitting written nominations to the FANRPAN Node Hosting Institutions by June 30, 2009. The FANRPAN Node Coordinators will assist the FANRPAN Regional Secretariat in screening candidates or organizations for selection by the FANRPAN Board. The winner of the 2009 FANRPAN Award will be announced in September.

Eligibility

The FANRPAN Award is given to any individual or identifiable group of individuals, as well as to established institutions, associations, organizations or government bodies with a formal and recognized membership in the FANRPAN network of national nodes in Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe, contributing to the overall goals of the Award.

Nomination Criteria

The Award is given to any qualified candidate(s), whose work, and contributions deriving from the work, has had a clear impact on the policy environment of Southern Africa, nationally, regionally or for the region. The Award recognizes such efforts and results in any field of work clearly related to food security and poverty reduction in Southern Africa, within every aspect of agriculture and food production. Nominated candidates must demonstrate their efforts in influencing policy and the impact of their efforts in terms of improving food security and alleviating poverty in their country or in the region.

Guidelines for Presenting Your Nominee

To be eligible for the Award, a nomination must be submitted in writing, in English or Portuguese. Please use these guidelines to ensure that we can properly evaluate your nomination. Portuguese guidelines can be downloaded at www.fanrpan.org (under FANRPAN Food Security Policy Leadership Award /Nominations 2009). Nominations should be sent to the node hosting institutions of your (see node contact details) or emailed to policy@fanrpan.org before or on the 30th of June 2009.

The Award will be presented during the official opening ceremony of the FANRPAN Annual Regional Dialogue on the 4th of September 2009 in Mozambique.
