ANNOUNCEMENT

FANRPAN to Participate at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Poznań
1 December 2008 - 12 December 2008

FANRPAN will participate at the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP 14/CMP 4 which began on the 1st of December 2008 in Poznań.

A six member delegation to the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Poznań will be led by FANRPAN CEO, Dr. Lindiwe Majele Sibanda. FANRPAN will participate in Poznań as part of the high level COMESA delegation representing the recently launched COMESA/FANRPAN Africa-wide Civil Society Climate Change Initiative for Policy Dialogues (ACCID).

The Poznań Climate Change Conference will provide the opportunity to draw together the advances made in 2008 and move from discussion to negotiation mode in 2009. At COP 14/CMP 4 in Poznań, parties are expected to:
  1. Agree on a plan of action and programmes of work for the final year of negotiations after a year of comprehensive and extensive discussions on crucial issues relating to future commitments, actions and cooperation.
  2. Make significant progress on a number of on-going issues required to enhance further the implementation of the Convention and the Kyoto Protocol, including capacity-building for developing countries, reducing emissions from deforestation (REDD), technology transfer and adaptation.
  3. Advance understanding and commonality of views on "shared vision" for a new climate change regime.
  4. Strengthen commitment to the process and the agreed timeline.
COMESA Side Event
COMESA will host a side event on the 10th of December 2008 at the Poznań conference to launch the Africa Climate Solution Initiative which promotes the REDD-AFOLU Coalition. This side event will present COMESA with an opportunity to advocate for an Africa-wide position on climate change.

Mr. Sindiso Ngwenya, Secretary General of COMESA, will deliver the keynote address, and representatives from the African Union, Civil Society Organisations, Development Partners, Banks and the scientific community will make presentations speaking to the climate change agenda.
