World food leaders meet to bridge divide with small-scale farmers

"Inclusive Business in Agrifood Markets - Evidence and Action"

The FANRPAN CEO, Dr Lindiwe Majele Sibanda was invited to moderate a plenary session on "Evidence of change and innovation in the public sector" and was also one of three key presenters in a parallel session on "Challenging policy in support of small-scale producer inclusion." Dr Sibanda made a presentation on "The Role of Research and Knowledge Sharing in Policy development".

Over 130 world leaders in farming, policy, agri-food business, research and civil society attended the meeting in Beijing. Thirty one countries were represented in what was the first ever global attempt to assess how modernisation of the food system can include and benefit small-scale farmers. The conference was an initiative of the Regoverning Markets programme, which represents a global consortium of 15 institutions worldwide and is coordinated by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED). Research for the southern African region was championed by the University of Pretoria, under the leadership of Prof Andre Louw. The southern African delegation included the following eminent leaders in the agriculture sector, Ajay M. Vashee (President of the Southern African Confederation of Agricultural Unions in Zambia and a member of the FANRPAN board), Gareth Ackerman (Chairman of Pick n Pay Holdings), Davison Chikazunga (Research Assistant at the University of Pretoria), Maria S. A Du Plessis (Project Manager of Agrifica (Ltd) Agricultural Intelligence and Project Company in South Africa), Chance Kabaghe (FANRPAN-Zambia node, Former Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Businessman), Motsepe Ramotse Matlala (President of the National African Farmer's Union in South Africa), Hamish McBain (Business consultant with Tiger Brands Ltd South Africa), Molefe S Mokoene (CEO of the National African Farmer's Union in South Africa), Tshililo Ronald Ramabulana (CEO of the National Agricultural Marketing Council-, FANRPAN NODE hosts- South Africa) and Johann G. van Deventer (Managing Director of Freshmark South Africa).

As a follow up to the research program, African delegates present agreed to set up a steering committee to champion advocacy for the regoverning of markets. Dr Lindiwe Sibanda was elected as coordinator of the Africa Regoverning Markets Steering Committee - ARMS.
