About the Conference

The Conference is organized under the auspices of IMAWESA a regional knowledge management project supported by IFAD and implemented by ASARECA and ICRISAT. The project addresses key issues and opportunities with the aim to improve policy, capacity strengthening for project implementation and knowledge management to guide interventions and investments in AWM in ESA.

Conference Theme & Sub-themes

The Conference theme is: Investment in Agricultural Water Management Pays

The sub-themes are:
  1. Policies & institutional support for AWM
  2. Technologies/Practices
  3. Regional initiatives
  4. Community level activities
  5. Small Watershed initiatives
  6. Gender & agricultural water management
Conference Objectives

This Conference is planned to:
  1. Show-case that “investing in water management for agriculture pays” so as to influence positive action and investment support for AWM
  2. Share knowledge and field experiences among policy makers, project implementers, extension workers, researchers, NGOs and all stakeholders who plan and implement AWM programmes.
  3. Identify policy, institutional, capacity and investment support needed at local, national and regional levels, to bring to bear AWM as key to food security, poverty reduction, climate change mitigation and for supporting sustainable livelihoods of smallholders in the region.
Events

The conference will involve Six events:
  1. Plenary paper presentations and discussions - led by specially invited Key-Note Speakers
  2. Thematic paper presentations and Discussions – in parallel sessions as per the sub-themes
  3. Panel Discussions – Specially invited experts to discuss specific AWM topics in plenary
  4. Displays by farmers and other participants – e.g. posters, products, documentary films
  5. Field trips and excursions – To selected sites where AWM has been implemented in Ethiopia
  6. Policy round Table Session - A Special round-table Session on Options for Policy, will be held on 19th September 2008. The session will enable delegates interact with policy makers who will include invited Ministers and Principal Secretaries of Government Ministries.
