In Africa, small holder farming accounts for 70 percent of Agricultural activities yet 200 million inhabitants are plagued by hunger and malnutrition. With 4 out of 5 Africans depending directly on agriculture for their livelihood, there is urgent need for farmers to focus on increasing productivity.

How can small holder farmers improve their service delivery to increase agricultural productivity? Join a team of Agricultural stakeholders during the Pan Africa Workshop on Service Delivery for Small Holder Farmers (Feb 4 – 5, 2008) organized by Inter Region Economic Network (IREN).

Farmers, agriculture industry players, media, academia and health experts among others will be discussing how Africa can exit dependency and be prosperous through commercializing agricultural ideas.

Consider writing a 6,000 word paper on any of the topics stated below. Topics of discussion are not limited to the ones provided.

  • Africa’s agricultural environment
  • Agricultural service delivery to small holder farmers in Africa
  • Crop protection industry in Africa
  • Seed and fertilizer industry in Africa
  • Mechanization among small holder farmers
  • Promoting product stewardship in Africa
  • Africa’s potential to utilize new agricultural products
  • The health effects of agriculture inputs
  • The contribution of agricultural inputs to wealth creation
  • Commercialization of agricultural ideas to move Africa out of dependency
  • Markets for small holder farmers
A 500 word abstract should be submitted by November 15, 2007. Authors of selected entries will be notified by November 30, 2007 and be expected to submit full papers by December 30, 2007. Two categories of papers shall be considered for presentation.

Category 1: An original paper that has not been published elsewhere. Successful authors in this category will be part of the panelists who will make a 15-minute presentation each, followed by an intensive discussion in the question/answer session. IREN may publish this paper in its IREN Occasional Paper series with your permission.

Category 2: A paper that may have been presented or published in another forum. Successful authors will be part of the panelists who will make a 15-minute presentation each, followed by an intensive discussion in the question/answer session.

NB: All topics of discussion MUST be in line with the conference theme.
