Background

FANRPAN and the South Africa Agricultural Research Council jointly submitted a proposal to the CGIAR Challenge Programme on Water and Food (CPWF) to implement the "Limpopo Basin Focal Project." We are pleased to announce that of the three proposals submitted for work in this basin, ours received the highest number of points - 95.5 out of 100. We are now negotiating the contract with the CPWF Secretariat, and implementation is expected to start in November 2006.

This is a two-year project with partners from all four basin countries (Botswana, Mozambique, South Africa, Zimbabwe) as well as partners from Malawi. View the full proposal.

This project provides the FANRPAN network the opportunity to work on natural resources issues from a multi-disciplinary perspective, especially issues of water and poverty in a transboundary river basin perspective. It will also provide support to students for field research.

More information is available from the CPWF web site, www.waterandfood.org, or contact the Project Leader, Doug Merrey, at the FANRPAN Secretariat ().
