Dialogue Issue 2: FANRPAN holds a 2nd regional stakeholder dialogue
July 2001

Recently, FANRPAN held its second regional stakeholder dialogue. This was to promote appropriate agricultural policies in the SADC region. The regional meeting was held in Harare from 6 - 9 May 2001. The theme for the meeting was "Agricultural Policy Making in Southern Africa: Issues and Challenges."

"At the meeting, the workshop came up with outputs of facilitating harmonization of policies for trade in agricultural inputs and outputs, and build capacity for agricultural policy formulation," said Dr Chris Sukume, the outgoing Interim Coordinator. "We were able to ensure that we shared policy concerns from various SADC countries. These concerns culminated in us identifying our common research agenda for the network. We also looked at gaps in policy formulation and the existing capacity for policy analysis and advocacy," Dr Sukume informed.

During the session, six leading analysts gave overviews and case studies of policy issues facing SADC countries. During discussions, participants were able to share lessons from all the country nodes with presentations on the results of the stakeholder consultative processes held earlier by the nodes. "This was also an opportunity for the network to discuss the two research and advocacy activities that had been initiated by FANRPAN and USAID-RCSA on grades and standards, and on seed market development," Dr Sukume further added.
